Do you have a professional mentor?

Do you have a professional mentor or someone who just gets you whom you can talk to about anything?

I have been a nurse for 17 years and my first professional mentor was Kathy, a registered nurse that I had been paired with on the telemetry floor in a hospital where I began my nursing career.

Kathy was super nice and had such patience with me. She was also very funny, which was a bonus in my book. Humor is a non-negotiable in my life.

I was part of the very first new grad program at my hospital and I know it is the reason I have been able to become such a great nurse. The new grad program provided a stable foundation for me.

I was with a group of ten other new grads for our first year of practice together. We met every week to review: new skills, standards of practice, and to talk about our fears and our wins.

I knew that someone always had my back. I felt safe. I felt connected. It felt like I mattered.

This is the best possible way to start a career in nursing. There are so many unknowns and there are no shortage of opportunities to second guess yourself or situations that may make you want to run and hide.

I will forever have gratitude for those mentors and that experience. I draw on it often.

That experience taught me early on that it is not only ok, but wise to ask for help or to clarify if you don’t know something. This is the courageous thing to do and is crucial when considering your actions, could mean the difference between a great outcome and a sentinel event.

I have been fortunate to have such wonderful mentors throughout my nursing career. Another one of my favorite mentors was Judy. She mentored me in the electrophysiology lab. She was part mentor, part mom. She was awesome and gave me such confidence in a high tech, fast paced working environment. A funny tip she shared with me that I can remember that is not related to nursing was to iron your clothes while watching tv!!! I love that idea, but I don’t watch tv anymore…………Still pure genius.

Despite all of the amazing mentors and support I have had throughout my nursing career, there was a time, about five years ago when I did not really know what to do or who to talk to about a feeling I had. It was this inner energy that I was not living up to my true potential.

I felt stifled and burned out. Not just stressed out and nursing kind of tired, but like, energetically and spiritually empty.

There was something more I was supposed to be offering the world, but I couldn’t quite put my finger on it. I had this inner longing going on inside my soul and there wasn’t really anyone who I could talk to about it. It was very isolating.

After loads of soul searching, yoga teacher training, nutrition school, and healing energy work, I have discovered that my gift is serving nurses. I am fulfilling my soul and spirit in my work as a life coach. I help nurses become their own Nurse Boss.

A Nurse Boss is a nurse who knows her purpose. Her mission is clear as mud! She has married her talents with her passions to create the life and career of her desires in service to others while also honoring her own body, mind, and soul. She is open to receive the abundance that her mindset and energy bring forth and does so without an ounce of guilt or feeling selfish. Becoming a Nurse Boss is easy, simply start with number 1

I believe a Nurse Boss is more about energy than anything else. An energy that embodies a growth mindset, positive energy, a vibe that exudes freedom, and is full of creativity and passion. A Nurse Boss is not necessarily associated with a specific nursing job.

If you are an aspiring Nurse Boss, try these simple tips……

1.Start where you are-with a curious/adventurous spirit.

Get the idea incubator flowing, by filling in the blank. I want more  ____________?

How can you facilitate that NOW?

2. Consider how you want to feel……. (Free/Abundant/Energized/Light/Loved/Healthy/Vital/Connected/Informed/Accomplished/


3. Create how you want to feel by doing things everyday that help produce the way you want to feel. If you are not sure, start exploring how that would look for you.

4. Write a list of ten things that bring you joy without exception and refer to it regularly for inspiration and to help cultivate gratitude. (For example, dancing in the rain)

5. Free up your precious energy by releasing what no longer serves you. What are you engaging in that is keeping you stuck in a negative pattern? (beliefs/habits/relationships/negative self-talk/complaining)

Simply reframe them with more positive words/beliefs/actions.

6. Write a list of five things that you would like to release that no longer serve you. Writing things down gives them more power.

7. Mail that list to yourself. Read it again and then put it away and allow the release to evolve. You are the creator of what you desire in your life. You hold the key. Every. Day.

8. Journal at least two days/week as soon as you get up from sleeping. Put pen to paper & write uninterrupted for 15 minutes. If you can’t think of what to write. Write, “ I can’t think of what to write.”

9. Make a creative date with yourself once a week doing something you deem creative. Bath with Epsom salts-salsa dance lessons- picnic at the park- movie by yourself-art gallery-pottery class-voice lessons-acting class-writing class.

10. After giving each step on the list a go, notice how you feel in body, mind, spirit.

You are a creator & when you are creating life on your terms, things are easier. You are living from your natural state of joy, ease, and abundance, not the familiar state of lack, fear, & struggle.

Working with energy and mindset is a practice, the more you do it, the easier it becomes. Every day it becomes easier to stay in a positive vibe and growth mindset. When the old patterns or limiting beliefs start to rear their ugly heads, it gets easier and easier to reverse that trend.

Nurse Boss-a blog series for nurses

Welcome to the 2nd installment of Nurse Boss. A blog series dedicated to nurses.

I was guided to create this series after a spark of creativity within my soul felt that it would help thousands of nurses.

My hope is that these interviews will ignite a spark in you or stir your inner landscape in a way that propels you to dream big and go after what it is that you desire in life and career.

Allow me to introduce Lydia Romero-Johnson. Lydia is an amazing woman, whom I befriended in business school, aka “B school.” B school is Marie Forleo’s online school for entrepreneurs who want to learn how to take their businesses online.   1. What are you doing now?

I am working as an RN in an outpatient psychiatric day hospital. It’s called a PHP, partial hospitalization program. I support patients with various psychiatric diagnoses. I educate them about their diagnosis and teach them positive and healthy ways of coping with it by implementing everyday stress management techniques.

I have started my own health coaching business, Lydia Romero Johnson, LLC. I provide support and coaching for women struggling with chronic health issues. Through our work together, women remember that it is okay to thrive, not just survive or get by in life.

  1. Did you always have the desire to do what you are doing now or did someone or something create a spark in you that made you realize this was your calling?

I knew I always wanted to help people, but I didn’t know in what way. I had a lot of family members, including myself, with health issues, which eventually drew me into nursing. I did have a lot of doubt about this decision. I didn’t think I could pull it off, as I knew it would be a huge responsibility. It took me a long time to really commit to this career decision, but once I did, I loved it. It felt natural to me!

I didn’t know what specialty I wanted to go into, but I knew I wanted to do something that would allow me to connect to the whole well-being of the person. I started working in the local health department, and found that wasn’t the right fit. I tried being a neonatal intensive care nurse, but that wasn’t a good fit either. The nights and rotations were not conducive to my desire for a balanced work and family life. I saw a position at an out-patient psychiatric hospital and remembered how much I enjoyed my psych rotation in nursing school.

I always felt that it was important for people to talk about their thoughts, feelings, and emotional state. I noticed a lot of people tend to avoid these topics! Anyway, as soon as I started working there, I felt like it was the right environment. I have been there for five and a half years. It’s great to see the progress of the patients who come in feeling hopeless and depressed and then leave with hope and the skills needed to cope with their symptoms and function in their daily lives. It feels great to make such a huge impact on these patients and I work with a great team.

In regards to my health coaching business, I knew that I needed to share what I’ve learned on my journey to health. I greatly improved my health and that motivated me to learn more. The spark was lit!!  I wanted to be able teach others how they can help themselves heal. That’s why I started my education at the Institute for Integrative Nutrition to become a certified health coach. Promoting a holistic approach to health and life is important to me.

        3.Why is nursing a great launchpad for nurses who want to create their own        lifestyle doing what they love?

Nursing has so many specialties, which gives you many options. If you want to work with patients in mental health, run groups, and give support and teach coping skills, you can do that. If you want to work in a hospital and assist in surgery, you can do that. If you want to do outreach in the community, reduce risk for infection, teach, or promote health in schools, you can do that too. There are so many options and a wide range of shifts that you can find the right fit for your lifestyle. You can also start your own business!! That’s some cool stuff. I didn’t always think it was possible, but now I know that it is.

  1. What is the ultimate characteristic of a nurse boss?

A nurse boss has to have confidence, because if you don’t have confidence you’ll be spending every day with a lot of doubt, which can hinder your career and also impact those around you. Confidence is a tool that allows you to move forward, to see your potential and the potential of those around you.

  1. What was the biggest obstacle you’ve faced to get to where you are now? How were you able to overcome it.

I have struggled with confidence. It is a huge responsibility to care for people, and I had a lot of doubt that I could do that, and I didn’t know how I could become a nurse. My dad had a 9th grade education and my mom graduated high school, and being a nurse meant going to college. That scared me. I remember thinking, “really, can I do that?” I had this asking permission stage where I kept questioning my ability. At the time I was working in retail and I was at a point where I had nothing to gain in the job and there was nothing left to give, and something kept speaking to me, telling me I had to try nursing. I had to tell myself it was going to be scary, but in order to grow and to get to the next level of where I wanted to be in life I knew I had to try it. So, I used that desire to push past my discomfort and in the process I gained confidence.  Again, with nursing, there are so many options, and with these options I embraced the holistic lifestyle that enabled me to be more confident.

  1. What does your current job allow you to do that traditional nursing did not?

For me, traditional nursing which involved twelve hour shifts was near impossible. Doing a twelve hour shift and getting off work just as my kids were heading to school or rushing from work so I wouldn’t miss my kid’s birthday party didn’t fit with my lifestyle. I also had to be mindful of my health struggles, and my current job allows me a better work-home life balance. I always felt I had a high emotional intelligence and that I was very empathic. My current job allows me to use those skills to help my patients. I am able to connect with the patients and support them in what is a vulnerable, scary, dark time in their lives. The average stay for a patient is about two weeks, which allows me to see their improvement. I love that! Between doing that and working on my business, it allows me to support the whole person: mind and body and spirit.

  1. For nurses who feel stuck in their careers what words of wisdom do you have to help inspire them to break out of their status quo?

My words of wisdom are that you always have options. It may not always feel like it, but you do. Sometimes it takes going completely outside of your comfort zone to live your dreams, but you are worth it!

  1. What resources can you share to nurses wanting to explore creating their own gig that actually pays them?

B-School created by Marie Forleo was a great resource for me. It is a community of mostly women, with a few men who are looking to make their own way.  Whether you are an artist, writer, massage therapist, or a nurse, B-School helps those who are trying to use those knowledge based skills. They support you and help guide you through how you can package your assets and share it with the world. If offers lots of support, guidance, and heart-centered networking. B-School is where you learn to create a business and life that you love.

My other recommendation is the Institute for Integrative Nutrition (IIN). Their training provides a holistic approach for health and wellness. Primary Food is a big part of their teachings. The Primary Food concept is not just about the food you eat, but your relationships, career, spirituality, and work-life balance. They do a great job of educating how to teach clients that aspect, which you don’t necessarily get in nursing. Many doctors and nurses have attended IIN to help expand their knowledge of preventative care through using a holistic approach.

  1. What book or publication is currently on your nightstand?

I have been using Audible lately. It makes it easier for me to read while I’m getting my business up and running. I’m currently listening to The Fire Starter Sessions by Danielle LaPorte, Big Magic by Elizabeth Gilbert and Leveraging the Universe and Engaging the Magic by Mike Dooley. I recommend them all!

    10. If you could only eat one food for the rest of your life what would it be? It would have to be oatmeal. I know some people say, oatmeal?, but yes oatmeal, with walnuts and raisins, a dash of cinnamon, and a splash of almond milk. Yum!

Is your story keeping you stuck or helping you heal?

Is your story keeping you stuck or helping you heal?

You have a story. A story fueled by the thoughts that play in the background of your mind about everything, past, present, and future that is colored by all of your life experiences. Your story becomes your being, whether you realize it or not.

The nature of your thoughts and beliefs shape how your life turns out. Since your thoughts are running in the background of your subconscious mind, it is easy to be unaware of the (healing or destructive)power of your thoughts. Even though, these thoughts are the driver of your actions.

Imagine an iceberg. Your subconscious is the part of iceberg that is beneath the surface of the water and is not visible.

So if your subconscious mind is invisible, how are you able to work with it?  A great place to start is to look at your patterns or what I lovingly refer to as your “tapes” or energy patterns. That program or set of limiting beliefs that is on repeat and seems to present itself time and time again, even if you don’t necessarily like what it’s presenting.

This could turn up in habitual patterns in your relationships, your career, or your weight issues.

There are three universal issues that most humans struggle with :

  • I am not lovable.
  • I am not worthy. 
  • I am lacking in something (don’t have enough intelligence, beauty, money, strength, courage)

You may have heard the saying “like attracts like”. When you apply this to your story, you can imagine that if you have predominantly negative thoughts, then you attract more negativity in your life. This negativity manifests as one struggle after another in your life. Nothing comes easy to you.

However, if your thoughts are positive, for the most part, then you attract optimism and opportunity. This manifests by things going well for you and you are able to attract what you desire. Things are just easier and frankly, more fun. From a bystander, it may appear as life just comes easy to you, but the bystanders don’t realize all the mindset and energy work you are doing in the background to create this pattern.

As a lifelong learner, I have always gravitated towards information or resources about “stories”. Mainly because I have struggled with my own story. The story I used to play went something like this, I would be presented with an opportunity to really shine or step into my full potential and I would get right up to the line in the sand and without fail, create some type of scenario that sabotaged the opportunity.

I finally reached a point in life when enough was enough. I was sick of being this amazing human with so many gifts to share with the world to cower and play small. It happened soon after 2013 after I professed to give up fear.

I gave up fear which was the most liberating thing I have ever done. All things are a G-O when fear is not part of the equation. No potential for failure and probability for oodles of success and fulfillment.

It turns out, it takes more than releasing fear to stop playing small. It takes clearing out the old energy and belief patterns that are ingrained in your being. Once you do this work, anything is possible.

Your limiting beliefs or energy patterns/programs have memory and even though you want to release old beliefs and habits, your energetic programming goes on red alert and when you try to do something new, it sets off alarms and creates self-doubt and tries to convince you that you can’t change.

These  programs or scripts are learned between the ages of birth and eight. As a result, the programming is really ingrained in your system. But, once you learn about them, it makes it easier to clear these old programs and set the intention to live in a way that honors your best self and aligns with what you really want.

The most powerful tool that allowed me to do this was learning about my particular energy type. This is something that Carol Tuttle, master energy healer created. It is called Energy Profiling.

The premise of her program is that the same four elements in nature are also in humans. You are born with a predominant energy type that revolves around one of the four elements.

Where it gets tricky, is between the ages of birth and eight. This is when you are told to be the exact opposite of your natural energy type. This makes life very difficult. You establish a mindset to survive during this time frame and when you try to clear this pattern as an adult it feels like a threat to your survival and it creates resistance.

Helping women work through this resistance is my passion. There is nothing more fulfilling for me than when I watch a woman transform from feeling insignificant in life and work, to a vibrant woman who is living to her fullest potential with no apologies.

Ever since learning my own energy type, the things that make me tick make so much more sense. I am no longer afraid of my own power. No more playing small, it’s just not my nature.

Wellness at Work

Wellness at Work is a big trend these days. It’s a no brainer for employers. If you want to reduce sick and disability pay and retain your employees for longer than six months, it’s a must. For employers who need to tighten the belt on nurse retention this is a big deal. Creating work environments that promote health and wellness not just for patients, but employees is a must to be competitive in the marketplace.

If you are a nurse working in a hospital have you ever stopped to consider the physical environment? I am talking about the air quality, the noise, the furnishings, the access to nature.  Imagine if hospitals started designing our work spaces with our health in mind…….

I worked at a hospital that had beautiful landscaping and access to nature. It was so refreshing to step outside and escape in the natural surroundings just for a few minutes. I always returned refreshed and less stressed. Sometimes, it’s the simplest things that can make the biggest impact.

Some facilities provide activities and outlets for their nurses to renew and relax, like this massage chair at  Cancer Treatment Centers of America at Midwestern Regional Medical Center in Zion, IL. It is the brainchild of Jillianne Shriver, RN, BSN, HN-BC, a team lead for the inpatient medical oncology unit who thought of it after attending a training on holistic nursing. She literally used an old storage closet and filled the room with a massage chair and other items for relaxation, such as: tools for aromatherapy, journaling, a yoga mat, Tibetan singing bowls, and a small water feature.  Check it out here: Nurse Renewal

Nurses need a place to unwind and debrief while on the job. It just makes good sense. All parties win. Employer, nurse, and patient. I love seeing nurses creating simple solutions that make staying well on the job easier and it is refreshing to see collaboration from employers seeking this input.

I love creativity, innovation, sustainability, pushing the edge (in a healthy way), and non-toxic everything. So, when I stumbled across Natalie Nixon’s article, 8 Ways to Design Health Care, I was very interested. The article is so chock-full of awesome, but I only want to talk about the first point she makes. Read it in its entirety here: Health Care Design

The first point she makes is about “modular health” and how physical structures and indoor environments impact our health. At Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota they have something called the Well Living Lab which is a research facility dedicated to studying how our physical environments impact our health and finding ways to create healthier indoor spaces. This design is the brainchild of Delos, a company that focuses on seven categories relevant to indoor health: air, water, nourishment, light, fitness, comfort and mind.  Delos is the pioneer of Wellness Real Estate™, a business that places health and wellness at the center of design and construction.

How becoming a yoga teacher helped improve my communication with doctors and made me a better nurse

I am sure you are curious about what yoga has to do with my nurse career……everything!

Never in a million years did I think that completing yoga teacher training would improve my nursing career or make communicating with doctors easier.

Then it happened.

I have practiced nursing for seventeen years. Ten of those, I spent working in a busy electrophysiology lab (that’s the circuitry division of the cardiac catheterization lab).

These were by far some of the best days of my practice! For those of you who practice in an operative type setting are aware of the relationships you create when working in this environment.

For those who do not work in this type of environment, I will share, that when you work in this type of setting, you become very close with all of the people who are part of that team. The doctors, nurses, x-ray technicians, device company clinicians, and others who support all the equipment you use in your day to day operations treating patients. For me, it was patients with heart rhythm disturbances. Working in such conditions, gives you a back stage pass to all the ins and outs of these team members’ lives and their idiosyncrasies.

Every human has their “buttons.” When under stress, a time crunch, or just having a crummy day these buttons get pushed and depending on the person (and whether or not they’ve had their coffee, it’s a full moon, or mercury is in retrograde), the people on the receiving end may receive an unwarranted dose of yelling or personal attacks.

It is ok to be crabby once in a while, but when people start yelling at others or throwing instruments, that crosses the line.

Prior to my yoga experience, whenever a physician was starting to engage in showing their frustration or anger by yelling, I would shut down and start to tread lightly, as if I were walking on egg shells. It never got to the point that I would not interject or interrupt the doctor on my patient’s behalf, but it always made me feel uneasy and like I was on high alert. It was as if they had some special power over me, and that I should be afraid of them.

This is never a good feeling to have as a nurse, because it can influence whether or not you speak up for your patient, which is never a good outcome.

Fast forward to my yoga teacher training. One of the doctors that I worked with agreed to be my “student” for yoga teacher training. I was both flabbergasted and ecstatic. A busy doctor taking the time and energy to help me complete my teacher training! Score! The exam went swell and after I received my certification the relationship that I had with said doctor changed forever.

I don’t know if it was that he had more respect for me, or what, but after that, I never every felt threatened, afraid, or worried about walking on egg shells again. It was as if we were now on a level playing field. I knew more about something than he did, and we were now equals in my mind.

At times when I could tell he was getting frustrated I would say, “you’re going to have to drop and give me fifteen chaturanga dandasana’s (a complex yoga move) if you keep it up.” That queue became his barometer for when he needed to cool it with his negative vibes. In an instant he would lighten up. That relationship spilled over into all of my relationships with doctors and made communicating with them so much easier.

I had this epiphany, that just because someone has MD after their name, does not give them the right to talk to me in a way that feels threatening or unkind.  I realized that we were on a level playing field and that they put their pants on just like me, one leg at a time.

This helped make me the best possible nurse, because I no longer stressed or walked on egg shells in certain situations. When we are under stress; especially chronically, we are far more likely to make errors. This puts us and our patients at risk. I had less stress (less potential for errors) and felt even more comfortable speaking up on behalf of myself and my patients (patient advocacy is crucial in great care, nurses are the eyes and ears of our patients and it is our duty to speak up when there is a change in their condition or a need to re-evaluate a previous plan of care). A win-win for all.

I respect and honor the hard work and schooling that doctors go through, but I will not allow a doctor, or anyone else for that matter to be disrespectful or rude to me. Having more education than me is no grounds for that type of behavior.

So, if you are feeling afraid or like you have to walk on egg shells at work, I get you. The great news is that you don’t have to go through yoga teacher training to change how you interact with people who are difficult. This applies to anyone who is being disrespectful to you and it doesn’t have to be at the workplace. No one deserves to be mistreated or treated disrespectfully.

The same goes for you, if you are the one treating others poorly. It goes both ways. You do not have the right to mistreat others.

When people are projecting that behavior, it is because they feel bad about themselves and use it as a way to make themselves feel better. Stop taking the bait.

The person being disrespectful is no better than you and they do not deserve your time or energy when they are speaking down to you or being disrespectful in some way. The best solution to this is to call them out on their behavior and say something like, “I can see that you are upset, however, I do not deserve to be treated this way and I am happy to give you my time and attention when you can treat me respectfully.” Then simply walk away.

Like attracts like. When we focus on our internal power (self-respect), we attract more power (respect). When we focus on our weaknesses, or what’s not “right” with us, we attract situations that highlight our weaknesses.

We all have parts of ourselves that we can improve upon. I call these opportunities. Continue to work on your “opportunities”, but also try to focus on what’s good and right with you, not on what’s not. You will attract positive, healthy, and empowering opportunities on your path. This will further empower you.

When asked by Elizabeth Scala, Registered Nurse, author, speaker, and host of The Art of Nursing 2.0 online event for nurses how I view the art of nursing in my professional practice, this is how I responded.

I have learned so much in my 17 years of practicing nursing. My perspective has shifted from one of “fixing” people to “guiding” them and I have transformed myself along the journey.

I felt so broken and unworthy for many years and that underlying current affected every aspect of my life, even my career. The result was saying NO to more opportunities than I can count or recall.

I now view myself as a healer.

I live my life as a creator and now believe that it is far better for me and the world to part with the idea that I have to struggle and not own my power and unique gifts with the world.

The art of nursing to me, is showing up as you are in your own creative way to guide others back to themselves. The art of nursing is reminding others that they too already possess exactly what they need to thrive in whatever way that looks or works for them.

I work part time as a telephonic case manager for an insurance company as I organically build my business, Whole Life Health LLC empowering nurses one heart at a time.

How rejection paved my path to career opportunity

how-noAs the first day of the new year, it felt apropos to share with you a poignant circumstance in my life that offered a huge wallop of NO and rejection and how I was able to overcome it.

We can pretty much all relate to a time of being told no or being rejected. It happens quite often.

It always feels like hell in the moment it happens. However, it’s what you do with that answer that makes the difference.


I find inspiration in these folks who took rejection by the horns and went on to experience major breakthroughs:

  • Albert Einstein was expelled from school and not admitted into the Zurich Polytechnic School.
  • Walt Disney was fired from the Kansas City Star in 1919 because the editor believed “he lacked imagination and had no good ideas.”
  • After performing at the Grand Ole Opry in Nashville, the concert hall manager told Elvis that he’d be better off going back to Memphis and “driving trucks.“

Perhaps rejection is the universe’s way of letting you know that you really did not want what you were after in the first place……. Or maybe, it’s that something way bigger is waiting around the corner……. It could also be that you’re just not cut out for what it is that you are attempting to acquire…….

Back to my story. I applied for and interviewed for a job that I felt was a shoe in. Essentially, I was already doing what the job described, so this was more like a formality. WRONG. I felt like the interview went swell and then I got the 2×4 upside the head. We’re sorry to inform you, but “we have decided that you are not what we are looking for in this position.”

Whoa. Talk about a huge hit to the ego and a large helping of reality central. I was honestly flabbergasted that I was not selected and it took me a few weeks to absorb what all that meant for me.

Was I not as qualified or successful as I thought? Was I a failure? Who else will hire me if I can’t get the job that I thought was a shoe in? That stings a lot. With some work, I was able to let go of my ego in the equation and listen for my intuition to clue me in on what the true message was for me.

It turns out, that the role that I was applying for turned out to be radically different from what I had been doing and a lot more complex than it appeared at the outset.

This outcome and my ability to see the silver lining opened the way for me to flourish in other ways. I continued perfecting my coaching and started applying myself in other ways within the company. I’m talking, ways that feed and nurture my heart and soul. Things that I have aptitude for, like integrative nutrition, yoga, and mindfulness.

If I had not been rejected, I know that I never would have seen the path to the opportunities that showed up at my door. Since one door closed, another one opened. One that was way more authentically aligned with my skill set and passions. This entire experience also fueled a significant mindset shift, from fear-based and lack to one of potential, opportunity, and success.

The universe always has your back and your angels are always sending you signals. When you are lucky enough to be paying attention, you have the capacity to thrive and build on the actions and intentions that set your soul on fire.

That my friends is the only way I commit to living in 2016.

What Kelly Johnson, RN and #showmeyourstethoscope revealed to me about nursing

My name is Lisbeth Overton and I am proud to be a registered nurse. I have had the privilege of practicing for seventeen years. My passion has been all things cardiac; especially my time in the electrophysiology lab helping patients suffering from irregular heart rhythms. Giving these patients their quality of life back was beyond rewarding.

Currently I work as a nurse case manager for an insurance company educating customers on how to prevent and/or live well with chronic conditions. I love this role because instead of “fixing” people, I am guiding them to see the correlation between their actions and the outcomes. It is rewarding to empower people to take accountability for their own health and to feel their joy knowing that they can create health and wellness in their own lives, one choice at at time.

I also have a private coaching practice teaching nurses how to leverage their unique gifts, creating the lifestyle of their dreams, where health and career thrive.

It seems like it was so long ago now, but the opportunity with registered nurse, Kelly Johnson had such an impact on me. She was Miss Colorado in the Miss America pageant and for her “talent” she wore the scrubs that she wears at work in her nursing job along with a stethoscope around her neck and shared how moving it was to care for a special patient of hers who was living with Alzheimer’s disease. The next day, she was ridiculed on The View for her “talent” and was reported to have read her patient’s emails for part of her monologue.

I have such gratitude for Kelly Johnson and the courage she displayed in the Miss America pageant. I also have gratitude toward the hosts of The View. If it weren’t for their comments, the depth and breadth of this opportunity would never have reached the scope that it did, nor had the impact. Multiple companies pulled their ads that played during The View’s time slot in support of nurses. Kelly’s courage and the lack of understanding of the hosts on The View created a perfect opportunity, or what my mom always refers to as a “teachable moment”.

I believe that the hosts’ comments came from a lack of understanding of what it is that nurses actually do. While it was disheartening and maddening as a nurse to hear such remarks, I believe it was the best thing to happen to nursing in the last ten years. It is an opportunity for nurses to reflect on how we show up in our profession and to join together to educate the world on what it is that we do and how crucial our profession is now and especially as the landscape of health, wellness, and disease changes.

This opportunity was an invitation to reflect on the nursing profession. If nursing is the most trusted profession, how could we be so disrespected? So, I engaged in the #showmeyourstethoscope and #nursesunited campaigns on Facebook. Just to give you some perspective, these groups had well over 800,000 members. I read countless posts by nurses who shared poignant stories of how they left no stone unturned to try and save a patient or bent over backwards to ensure that connections with family members occurred before a patient took their last breath. There were also thousands of posts by healthcare consumers, specifically moms and dads who had nothing but kindness and gratitude to the droves of nurses who cared for their sweet children and never would have made it without the nurses. I also read stories by men and women and their struggle to get to and through nursing school because that had always been their dream.

I also noticed a theme that weaved its way through so many of the stories. This was the mention of all of the things that did not get cared for by the nurses themselves, commonly seen on social media with the hashtag #nurseproblems. This ranged anywhere from not using the bathroom for ten+ hours to working over twelve+ hours straight, not getting enough sleep, not eating on their breaks because they were understaffed, and not feeling safe at work.

Here is the gift and the curse of being a nurse. Nurses are extremely giving, compassionate, strong-willed, creative, artistic, intelligent, and noble. As such, there tends to be more giving than taking or receiving. There is simply no way to continue to offer this to thousands of patients without first recognizing your own need to heal and recover.

One could argue that there are a gazillion reasons that nursing is where it is today that don’t involve the nurse. But at the end of the day, I would argue that no one can make you feel a certain way and when your body, mind, and soul are completely tapped what good is it, if this is all someone else’s fault?

It is time to start taking accountability for our health and careers. You each have the right of choice. If you are a nurse and are struggling with your health, your job, or your relationships, I would ask yourself, what role am I playing in this? Why is it that I believe I deserve to be treated this way? What can I do to improve this? Often it is when we feel that we have no choice that we give up. Just remember, we each have choice. We each deserve to be treated with respect. Now, I challenge you to reflect on your day to day choices. Are they helping you heal or harming you? Why are you making these choices? Are you asking for help? What could you do differently? Are you part of the problem or part of the solution?

I struggled with health issues and feeling disempowered for quite some time. I had no idea how much power my negative thoughts had on my health and the types of circumstances that kept showing up for me. I have discovered that standing up and standing out is the best thing that has ever happened to me. I have learned how to leverage my own thoughts and energy to my advantage. I am healthier, happier, and more empowered than I have ever been. I am now speaking my truth. My mission is to give back to the nursing profession by helping other nurses do the same. Nurses are the backbone, the glue of care. We have such potential and are at a crossroads right now in the landscape of health care. We can either rise up and own our worth and provide amazing education and care for our world, or we can curl up, stay silent, and stay disempowered. I have experienced both and I certainly prefer thriving.

It is time that nurses stand up, band together and start acting like they matter. To me, it looks something like this.

  • Nurses have a very good understanding of their non-negotiables.
  • Nurses have strong boundaries.
  • Nurses have the opportunity to stay well at the workplace.
  • Nurses have flexibility in their schedules.
  • Nurses are staffed for patient safety.
  • Nurses are board members in health care organizations.
  • Nurses create the life they desire that includes everything they want.
  • Nurses learn to say YES to themselves first without guilt.
  • Nurses learn holistic self-care in every nursing school curriculum.
  • Nurses learn to say NO without guilt.
  • Nurses learn effective communication in nursing school.
  • Nurses ask for what they need from their employer.
  • Nurses ask for support from their managers.
  • Nurses complete unsafe staffing forms.
  • Nurses stand in their power by refraining from the phrase “just a nurse”.
  • Nurses ask for coverage so they can take their breaks.
  • Nurses communicate clearly and effectively.
  • Nurses get support from other nurses who understand what they are going through.
  • Nurses believe that they can make a difference in their own lives.
  • Nurses walk their talk.
  • Nurses demand respect as the professionals they are and will refrain from engaging with anyone who is not honoring that expectation.
  • Nurses respect one another.
  • Nurses help one another.

Nursing is one of the most noble professions on the planet. I am honored to be a nurse. I am on a mission to help nurses stand in their power and become the backbone of healthcare that we are. We are at a tipping point. We need strong, healthy, savvy nurses now more than ever before. If we want to be respected and treated well we have to start acting like we matter. I hate to see nurses go through nursing school just to quit one or two years in because it is too unhealthy and stressful. It does not have to be that way.  A nurse should not have to give up a healthy lifestyle or his/her career because it makes him/her ill.
